HR Specialist
Engrain
Engrain builds map-based tech that’s redefining how real estate works. Our interactive, unit-level maps and powerful data integrations help over 1,000 companies—and 20,000 properties—to make smarter decisions, streamline leasing, and deliver better renter experiences. From prospect to renewal, our products give properties a spatial brain and a visual edge when it comes to property marketing and management. And it’s working: our churn rate is just 5%, and we’ve been putting up double-digit growth numbers every year.
We’re not your typical proptech company. We move fast, we stay curious, and we don’t do stale or corporate fluff. Backed by successful Seed and Series A rounds, we’re entering a phase of serious scale.
We are seeking an experienced HR Specialist to join our team. This role is crucial in supporting Engrain’s Denver office location and remote employees as a hands-on professional responsible for the operational and technical excellence of our HR department. The HR Specialist will manage the "gears" of the employee lifecycle—ensuring data integrity, coordinating benefits, and streamlining HR workflows. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources and working in close partnership with the HR team, this individual will ensure the HR infrastructure is efficient, compliant, and scalable. The person in this role will find success by being a process-oriented professional with an eye for detail and a “roll up your sleeves” drive to maintain a high standard of operational support in an AI-augmented environment.
What you’ll do...
- Manage HRIS and data integrity: Serve as the primary owner of the HRIS (Paylocity), ensuring all employee records are accurate and developing streamlined workflows for data entry and reporting.
- AI-powered workflow integration: Integrate AI tools into daily workflows to increase output quality and speed, specifically focusing on administrative efficiency.
- Payroll partnership: Coordinate closely with the Accounting department to ensure seamless payroll cycles by managing deductions, bonuses, and new hire data.
- Benefits coordination: Act as the internal point of contact for benefits administration, including assisting employees with enrollment, managing leaves of absence, and supporting the Director of HR during annual renewals.
- Compliance & responsible AI usage: Monitor federal, state, and local employment laws for a multi-state operation while ensuring responsible AI usage when working with sensitive employee data.
- Reporting & analytics: Apply AI tools to audit large HR datasets for anomalies and generate metrics (turnover, headcount, compensation trends) to provide actionable insights.
- Process improvement: Identify opportunities to automate manual, repetitive HR tasks using Engrain’s internal tech stack and emerging AI tools.
- Human accountability: Critically evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy and maintain human accountability for all final deliverables, applying a consistent human-in-the-loop approach.
- Employee support: Provide clear, accurate guidance to employees and managers on HR policies and benefits, utilizing AI to summarize stakeholder meetings or project timelines when necessary.
- Project support: Partner with the Director of HR on specialized projects, such as compensation benchmarking, handbook updates, or system implementations.
What you offer us...
- 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible experience in HR operations, benefits, or a related technical HR role.
- Critical thinking skills: The ability to "humanize" technical HR information and identify subtle nuances or sensitivities that automated reports might overlook.
- Multi-state regulatory knowledge: Deep understanding of the specific compliance nuances for Colorado (like the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act) and other high-growth tech hubs.
- AI literacy: Experience applying generative AI tools to solve problems, draft internal communications, or analyze HR information.
- Responsible AI awareness: Strong understanding of privacy, ethics, and governance considerations in AI-enabled operations.
- Prompting & refinement skills: Ability to craft effective prompts and improve AI outputs through iteration and judgment.
- Adaptability: A continuous learning mindset as AI tools, models, and workflows evolve rapidly.
- Cross-functional collaboration: A track record of working effectively with Finance/Accounting and IT departments to align HR initiatives with broader company financial and security goals.
- Technical skills: Advanced proficiency in HRIS systems and familiarity with AI-driven data auditing tools. Familiarity with Paylocity is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field.
- HRIP, PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred.
