What you will be doing:
The Platform Database Engineer will design and develop database management software for PassiveLogic’s Hive Controller embedded device.
The Hive Controller combines PassiveLogic's Autonomous Building Platform technology with state-of-the-art wireless sensors, intelligent I/O, and a user interface — all in a simple plug & play appliance that runs at the edge. It acts as a scalable, distributed compute and data storage system for customers throughout the Building Automation industry. Learn more about the Hive here.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement software to manage the installation, configuration, and upgrading of a distributed, fault-tolerant database
- Design systems for back up and safely retaining customer data
- Analyze existing SQL schema to identify potential areas for improvement
- Review database changes to ensure all database standards and database documentation is within compliance
- Build and prototype new services for our building automation platform
- Work with components including API design, distributed database design, and data collection and aggregation — all with a focus on security and scalability
- Work closely with the leadership team to understand PassiveLogic's business needs

You must have:
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of Software Engineering and Software Design experience
- Self-motivation, passion for technology, and a strong drive for results and continuous improvement
- Experience in multiple software paradigms, including data-driven, OOP, functional, and protocol-oriented software design
- Experience designing and maintaining relational database schemas
- PostgreSQL experience
- A passion for database performance
You should have:
- 3+ years experience in software development and coding a systems language (C/C++, Swift, Golang, etc.)
- Experience contributing to open source databases such as Postgres and SQLite
- An understanding of database principles and are comfortable writing SQL
- Experience deploying clustered databases such as Yugabyte, CockroachDB, etc.
- Experience applying high availability database methodologies
It’s helpful to have:
- A strong knowledge of Linux
- Swift language development experience
- Experience with or knowledge of Agile Software Development methodologies
- A security background
- A foundational understanding of autonomous systems design
- Experience mentoring and guiding junior team members
