Thermodynamics/Physics Simulation Engineer

Thermodynamics/Physics Simulation Engineer

Do you long to apply your academic expertise to an impactful and engaging business problem that will reduce energy consumption of the building sector?

What you will be doing:

The Thermodynamics Simulation Engineer will develop physics-based models of building and HVAC components, equipment, assemblies, systems, buildings, and campuses. These models will be used across teams to simulate components and systems of components for validation and testing. Validated models are used by our AI simulation engine to optimize building system control.

Responsibilities:

  • Defines & develops fundamental component templates
  • Manages the component template evolution process
  • Standardize and validate physics-based models for use by the PassiveLogic control engine for optimized autonomous control of buildings
  • Work on mathematical equipment models, thermo-physical systems modeling, and building simulation
  • Participate in both model development and software development

About PassiveLogic

PassiveLogic is disrupting the world of automation with the first generalized platform for autonomy. Our first application for autonomy is buildings — the largest and most complex controlled infrastructure in the economy. Our culture is built on bringing together the most talented engineers, thinkers, and creatives — backed by the world’s leading investors — working collaboratively together to build the future we envision.

PassiveLogic’s infinitely configurable platform enables users to design their own custom autonomous systems. We've reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to replace legacy control logic with real-time control decisions at the edge, reducing the world’s carbon footprint, while paving the way for the future of smart cities. We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and want to work on real-world solutions to some of the toughest problems.

You must have:

  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
  • Understanding of buildings, mechanical, and/or process control
  • Strong math, numerical methods, and analysis skills
  • Experience with mathematical modeling (e.g. Modelica, Dymola, Matlab, Mathcad, Maple, Python, etc)
  • Come from a variety of science and engineering backgrounds including physics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architectural engineering etc.
  • Experience building physics-based models
  • Have interest in (or, better yet, experience with) computer programming and/or software development
  • Strong desire to be an extraordinary teammate with a collaborative, interpersonal communication style
  • Openness to participate in a feedback-based work process to guide improvements and drive growth

You should have:

  • Good analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with FEA modeling techniques
  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Matlab, C++, C, Swift, etc)
  • Fundamentals of building energy and/or HVAC systems

It’s helpful to have:

  • Familiarity with graph theory and Bond Graph modeling approach
  • Experience with EnergyPlus or other building simulation environments
  • Swift language development experience (S4TF even better)
  • Familiarity with heuristic, statistical, or machine learning methods
  • Experience working in a startup

Compensation, Perks, & Benefits for the Thermodynamics/Physics Simulation Engineer:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Equity share
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, FSA, HSA, Disability, and Term Life Insurance
  • Flex PTO
  • Well-stocked break room snacks and catered lunch Monday through Friday
  • Free ski passes (We are at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon)
  • Free National Park passes
  • We push our performance personally as well as professionally, and we do respect flexible hours around well-earned powder days

To apply for this Thermodynamics/Physics Simulation Engineer position:

  • A cover letter telling us why you're the perfect candidate for PassiveLogic
  • A resume
  • Extra mile — include a description of a project (of any type) you personally created, devised, built, managed, organized, or designed that was of your own self-initiative

We are looking for practitioners who are passionate about understanding people, committed to lifelong learning, and driven by the love of what they do. We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we’ve described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven’t considered. If that’s you, please apply.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity, inclusion, and belonging are woven into our values and everything we do. We welcome all — come as you are and bring your whole self. We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
