Scaling Startup Controller

Scaling Startup Controller

Own and operate accounting operations and financial controls within a global, scaling startup environment, becoming a driving force behind the physical AI platforms shaping autonomous systems and new markets.

About PassiveLogic®

PassiveLogic is the first fully autonomous platform for buildings. We’ve reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to democratize technology, optimize buildings, and reduce the world’s carbon footprint. We are a team of technologists, engineers, and creatives dedicated to making a sustainable impact through real-world solutions.

We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and want to work on cutting-edge problems with real-world solutions. Our culture is built on bringing together the most talented engineers, thinkers, and creatives—backed by the world’s leading investors—working together to make the future a reality.

About the Role

This is a career-defining opportunity to play a critical leadership role at a hyper-scale AI company transforming autonomous systems, energy, and the built environment.

As our Controller, you will own all accounting operations and financial controls within a global, scaling startup environment. You will be accountable for the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financial records, oversee operational accounting, establish scalable processes, and partner closely with executive leadership. This role blends strategic oversight with hands-on execution and is essential to enabling PassiveLogic’s continued growth in a global setting.

What You’ll Do

  • Own all accounting operations across the company: GL, AP, AR, payroll accounting, purchasing, invoicing, payments, and cash.

  • Treat controls as infrastructure. Design and build—accounting policies, controls, and processes that scale with the company.

  • Ensure financial data is internally consistent, auditable, and trustworthy.

  • Make closing the book boring…in the best way.

  • Manage real-world complexity, overseeing accounting for international entities and relationships.

  • Connect accounting to decision-making, translating accounting reality into insight leaders can use.

  • Evolve the accounting function into a platform that supports strategic finance and long-range modeling for the next stages of PassiveLogic’s growth.

Who You Are

  • You think in systems, not rows and columns.

  • You believe accounting is a model of reality, not a compliance exercise.

  • You care deeply about internal consistency, edge cases, and second-order effects.

  • You can zoom from transaction-level detail to company-level structure without losing coherence.

PassiveLogic is a home for people with long attention spans, a love of depth, and a desire to separate signal from noise.

Why This Role Matters

We are building autonomous systems that operate in the real world. That requires financial systems that are just as grounded in reality.

Your work becomes the financial substrate of the company—the thing every model, forecast, and decision ultimately depends on.

If you want to own the truth beneath the strategy, and build something that holds up as the company scales, this role is for you.

What You’ll Bring

If your experience does not meet all our posted requirements below, we’d still love to hear from you. We are looking for practitioners who are passionate about understanding people, committed to lifelong learning, and driven by the love of what they do. If that’s you, please apply!

You must have

  • CPA or equivalent.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with clear ownership of close and reporting.

  • A track record of building or rebuilding accounting systems, not just maintaining them.

  • The ability to explain complex financial reality in plain language.

  • Comfortable across multiple tools; you haven’t spent your career confined to Excel.

  • Collaborative, ownership-minded, and able to navigate diverse perspectives.

  • Deep experience with QuickBooks Online and modern accounting workflows.

You should have

  • Experience in tech, hardware, or capital-intensive businesses.

  • Exposure to international operations or multi-entity structures.

It’s helpful to have

  • Experience operating spreadsheets in Apple Numbers.

  • Experience with hardware + software business models.

  • Understanding of regulatory-driven markets (energy, building automation, labor, logistics, AI governance).

  • Experience modeling multi-market rollouts, marketplaces, or partner ecosystems.

  • Experience with HVAC, industrial systems, logistics modeling, or labor markets.

We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we’ve described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven’t considered. PassiveLogic can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities to the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background. Even if you don’t meet all the requirements above, we still want to hear from you.

A Note on Working Onsite:

This role is based in our Salt Lake City headquarters. We believe that creativity and cohesion flows best when we are all together.
