Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced, systems-minded, and values-driven Head of People Success to build out our People function. With ~150 teammates globally — including full-time employees and international independent contractors — this role is central to ensuring we scale with intention, compliance, and heart.

This is a team-of-one role — you'll have support from our Global Office Manager on operational logistics and employee programs — and is ideal for someone who thrives on building infrastructure from the ground up, with care for the people behind every process. You will be the architect of our HR infrastructure, employee performance & engagement programs, people systems, and global compliance practices, bringing structure to our growing team while fostering a culture of trust, fairness, and belonging. We expect this function to remain small and intentional for the foreseeable future — depth of execution over breadth of headcount. This high-impact role will report to the VP of Finance, and work closely with cross-functional leaders to shape the employee experience end-to-end.

Key Responsibilities

HR Infrastructure & Systems Building

  • Oversee the entire employee lifecycle (hiring, onboarding, development, retention, offboarding) to ensure a consistent, positive experience.
  • Build and implement scalable HR systems, tools, and workflows to support onboarding, offboarding, performance management, and team communication across global time zones.
  • Evaluate and optimize our HR tech stack to drive efficiency, compliance, and user experience.
  • Maintain and standardize people data, documentation, and reporting across employment types and countries.

Performance, Engagement & Talent Programs

  • Design and lead programs that promote high accountability, engagement, belonging, psychological safety, and feedback culture across a distributed team.
  • Define the company's first compensation philosophy, leveling framework and performance management system.
  • Partner with leadership to build strong onboarding, recognition, performance feedback, and career development frameworks.
  • Guide People team strategy team communications, wellness, and internal community-building initiatives.

Compliance & Global People Operations

  • Own internal HR policies and employee handbooks; update regularly in accordance with evolving employment laws and company practices.
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on employee relations matters, employment law, and risk mitigation.
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, and Operations to scale international hiring, manage EOR (Employer of Record) and contractor structures, and assess global employment risks.
  • Standardize core People practices (comp, performance, time off, benefits) while allowing room for local customization where required.
  • Assess and manage local compliance and systems across a globally distributed workforce.
  • Oversee payroll processes and ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in partnership with Finance.

Leadership & Strategic Partnership

  • Act as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the executive team on org design, talent strategy, and workforce planning.
  • Coach managers on leading distributed teams, giving feedback, and building inclusive, high-performing teams.
  • Establish and track KPIs related to engagement, retention, turnover, time-to-hire, and onboarding effectiveness.
  • Own succession planning and leadership development initiatives to ensure long-term organizational strength.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive HR/People Ops experience, with experience leading, mentoring or managing others – formal team management not required.
  • Prior experience as a first or early HR hire at a high-growth startup and with a globally distributed environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and implement systems, processes, and policies from the ground up.
  • Experience with global HR compliance — including worker classification, international employment practices, and EOR structures — with direct experience in at least one Latin American and Europe markets strongly preferred.
  • Ability to seamlessly shift between strategic leadership and hands-on execution of HR operations.
  • Strong analytical skills — comfortable using data to drive decisions and report progress.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Humble, empathetic, systems thinker who leads with curiosity and care.
  • Comfortable working as a team-of-one: highly self-directed, resourceful, and able to prioritize ruthlessly in a lean, high-growth environment.
